An acoustics experiment takes place inside an anechoic chamber lined with large wedge-shaped sound-absorbing panels. A loudspeaker mounted on a stand faces measurement equipment positioned on a tripod, while a researcher stands nearby holding a notebook. The chamber’s geometric foam wedges cover the walls to minimise sound reflections, creating a controlled environment for acoustic testing and measurement.

Improving Noise and Vibration in Cars

Project outline Option A – Advanced acoustic metamaterials for automotive application The sound a car makes is extremely important for customer satisfaction. Acoustic materials are one of the most common ways of treating unwanted sounds in the vehicle cabin. Metamaterials have become a hot topic in acoustics research and offer the possibility of creating more sustainable acoustic […]

Low-Frequency Acoustic Metamaterials for Aircraft Noise Reduction

Project outline Aircraft noise remains a major environmental challenge as the aviation industry moves toward quieter and more sustainable propulsion systems. Low-frequency noise, produced by jet engines and fans, is particularly difficult to suppress using conventional acoustic liners due to its long wavelengths and high energy content. This PhD project will explore the use of […]

Auralisation of Acoustic Metamaterials

Project outline This project aims to develop virtual models to simulate and assess how humans perceive sound altered by acoustic metamaterials across different applications (such as absorptive treatments and noise mitigation), and to develop an interactive web app that demonstrates the sound of acoustic metamaterials through auralisation. The emergence of acoustic metamaterials has opened up […]

Acoustic Performance, Analysis and Design of Steel Composites

Project outline To improve the acoustic performance in indoor environments it is vital to have a good understanding of all possible transmission paths between points in a building. This research focuses on steel stud-based double leafed walls which are building components that act as partitions inside buildings forming separate units or “rooms”. I am specifically […]
