Project title: Multi-Physics Investigation of Noise-Vibration and Mitigation Strategies for Next Generation Vacuum Cleaner Design

Project Partner: Vax

University: University of Southampton

Supervisors: Dr Chaitanya Paruchuri and Professor Phillip Joseph

Briefly, what is your PhD project about?

Multi-Physics investigation of Noise-Vibration and mitigation strategies for next generation vacuum cleaner design with main focus on electric motor NVH behaviour.

Why is it important to do this research?

Automotive, commercial, aviation & other transport industries moving towards using electric motors as the power source in their products. At the same time these industries face increasing consumer demands for quieter operation while maintaining superior performance. Electric motors present particularly challenging NVH issues including tonal components from rotor unbalance, electromagnetic excitation harmonics, slotting effect tones, and blade pass frequency noise from aerodynamic interactions. Despite significant advances in motor technology, existing approaches fail to capture the complex multi-physics interactions governing suction motor NVH behaviour across diverse operating conditions. This research is important not only to study the mutliphysics characteristics of the noise but also improve and design the motors that meet new evolving customer noise comfort levels.

What drew you to studying this PhD?

Working with University of Southampton on Knowledge Transfer Project (KTP) showed me the advantages of combining the research and product development & this motivated me to pursue PhD.

What does a Sustainable Sound Future mean to you?

It means a well rounded research that helps and improves lives of individuals and leaves an impact in the future research field

What were you doing before joining the CDT?

I was working as Lead NVH engineer at Vax limited, UK.

What do you do on a typical PhD day so far?

As I am a part time PhD student, I am still figuring out a proper schedule that fits well for my literature review and research.
