Hi I’m Sam, I am studying my PhD in aerospace engineering (research) at the University of Bristol, partnered with ESDU.

Project title: Propeller and Rotor Broadband Noise

Project Partner: ESDU – Accuris

University: University of Bristol

Supervisors: Professor Mahdi Azarpeyvand and Dr Esmaeel Masoudi

Briefly, what is your PhD project about?

My project focuses on broadband noise emitted from the trailing edge of propeller blades.

Why is it important to do this research?

Broadband noise spans a wide range of frequencies, producing the characteristic hissing and whooshing of propellers; understanding its mechanisms is key to developing quieter aerospace applications.

What drew you to studying this PhD?

Living near 3 airstrips, in the past 3 years, has made me aware of the amount of noise these aircraft make. So why not use my experience to tackle the problem.

What does a Sustainable Sound Future mean to you?

For air transport, sound can be a harmful waste product. Being able to make transportation quieter while increasing efficiency is therefore essential for a more sustainable future.

What were you doing before joining the CDT?

Before the CDT, I completed my BEng and MSc in aerospace engineering.

What do you do on a typical PhD day so far?

Lots of reading!

Tell us a fun acoustic fact!

Spiders don’t have ears, but tiny hairs on their legs can detect the vibrations of sound moving through the air.
