Students Inspire the Next Generation of Acousticians

March 2026

This month has been an inspiring one for the CDT in Sustainable Sound Futures, with students actively engaging schools, universities, and local communities to highlight the exciting opportunities within acoustics.

Physics Meets Acoustics at the University of Salford

CDT Sound Futures student Katie Salter delivered an insightful presentation to physics undergraduates at the University of Salford as part of the Physics In Context seminar series.

Katie shared her personal journey into acoustics, demonstrating how foundational physics principles underpin the field and outlining the diverse postgraduate pathways available.

“I enjoyed presenting to physics students at the University of Salford this week, showing how physics is essential to acoustics and demonstrating a path they could take after studying physics,” Katie reflected, thanking Dr. Marina Leontiadou for the invitation.

Her session offered students a clear view of how their current studies can translate into a rewarding and impactful career

Inspiring Future Talent at Community Events

Fellow CDT Sound Futures student Matt Torjussen, also spent time encouraging people to consider acoustics as a future profession. Representing the field at a careers fair hosted by Rugby Library, Matt demonstrated specialist equipment—generously loaned by noise.co.uk Ltd and Clover Acoustics—to give attendees a hands-on introduction to sound measurement and analysis.

His enthusiasm and practical demonstrations offered students a glimpse into the real-world applications of acoustics, from environmental noise monitoring to cutting-edge audio technologies.

Alumni Outreach Across Scotland

“It was great to share my academic journey since high school with both sets of students,” Max said, reflecting on conversations that ranged from networking advice to postgraduate opportunities within the CDT. He also discussed the work of the Institute of Acoustics Scottish Branch and the ongoing objectives of the Noise Network Plus initiative.

CDT student Max Ellis returned to Glasgow this month to participate in alumni panel discussions at both the University of the West of Scotland and Eastwood High School.
