Students visit National Wind Tunnel Facility in Bristol

In February, students from Cohort 1 travelled to the University of Bristol for intensive two‑day topic training at the National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF).

The group was hosted by Prof Mahdi Azarpeyvand, Dr. Daniele Zagaglia, Dr. Sen Wang and Dr. Abhishek Mishra who led an integrated theoretical and experimental training programme in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics.

The visit began with a series of introductory seminars delivered by Bristol’s aeroacoustics team, covering key foundational topics including turbulence and turbulent flows, foundations of aeroacoustics and hot‑wire anemometry. These sessions equipped students with the core concepts needed before moving into the laboratory environment.

The cohort gained hands‑on experience using the NWTF’s advanced wind tunnel facilities to measure turbulent flow and explore real‑world aerodynamic and aeroacoustic phenomena. The Bristol CDT Topic Day training offered students valuable exposure to state‑of‑the‑art research methods and experimental techniques used across the field.

A real throw-back to my undergraduate physics years! Thanks to the team at Bristol for preparing such an interesting programme – Katie Salter
