EPSRC Sustainable Sound Futures CDT programme has just launched their new list of fully funded PhD projects to join the Sustainable Sound Futures CDT programme from September 2026.
Across the 4 partner universities (Bristol, Salford, Sheffield and Southampton), the CDT is offering over 20 PhD projects spanning vibro-acoustics, aeroacoustics and metamaterials to environmental acoustics.
The programme is looking for applicants who
- want to join and collaborate across a diverse community of researchers.
- have the potential to do great research and contribute new knowledge to the field of acoustics.
- have a broader interest in sound
The four‑year funded CDT programme combines deep technical expertise with broad, interdisciplinary skills. Students learn through:
- Cohort‑based training that builds community and shared purpose.
- Masterclasses, residentials, and topic days covering acoustics, simulation, measurement, machine learning, psychoacoustics, and many other topics of research.
- Professional development in policy, public engagement, sustainability, entrepreneurship and responsible innovation.
- Placements with industry and academic partners to ensure real‑world impact.
- Access to world‑class laboratories and facilities across four leading universities.
This integrated approach equips graduates to tackle complex interdisciplinary challenges spanning transport, energy, construction, manufacturing, health, culture, and the environment.
List of available PhD projects and information on how to apply can be found on the CDT Website: https://soundfutures.salford.ac.uk/apply/
Application submission deadline: 11 January 2026
A funded PhD working with industry offers a great chance to do research that creates impact….in joining the CDT you’ll get a breadth of training not normally achieved on a PhD and have support from a amazing, diverse set of Acoustics PhD students.
